Designing a Values-Driven Career: Confidence Comes From Doing, Not Watching

In Part 1, we explored how attention can quietly replace values—and leave many designers feeling anxious, exhausted, and unsure of what really matters.

Part 2 is about what comes next.

Confidence Is Built Through Action

It’s easy to believe confidence comes first.

Online, it looks like people are sure of themselves before they begin. In reality, most confidence is earned quietly, through action:

  • Trying something new

  • Getting it wrong

  • Adjusting

  • Trying again

Confidence doesn’t arrive fully formed—it grows through experience.

Watching Feels Safer Than Doing

Consuming content can feel productive. It feels like preparation.

But watching others succeed is not the same as building your own experience.

Doing the work—especially early in your career—means discomfort:

  • Not knowing the outcome

  • Feeling unsure

  • Being visible while learning

That discomfort isn’t failure. It’s growth.

Values Give Context to Discomfort

When your choices are driven by attention, every misstep feels personal.

When they’re driven by values, discomfort becomes meaningful.

Values help you stay grounded when:

  • Progress feels slow

  • Work feels challenging

  • You’re unsure if you’re “doing it right”

They remind you why you chose this path in the first place.

Experience Builds Confidence—Not the Other Way Around

Many students wait to feel confident before speaking up, applying, or taking risks.

But confidence follows experience.

Each time you:

  • Ask a question

  • Try something unfamiliar

  • Reflect on what didn’t work

You build self-trust—and that’s what confidence actually is.

Real Value vs. Imaginary Value

The attention economy rewards visibility, speed, and status.

But real value is built through:

  • Showing up consistently

  • Learning from mistakes

  • Developing judgment over time

Imaginary value looks impressive. Real value builds a long-lasting career.
